What is Empowering Hearts?

Empowering HeArts is an annual celebration of women who have changed lives and shaped their communities. It bridges the worlds of social action and artistic expression in an annual arts competition.

Honorees are nominated by the community and selected by the Single Mothers Outreach (SMO) Board of Directors and Event Planning Committee.

The Empowering Hearts Gala presents the creative works of Santa Clarita Valley artists who create unique and inspiring art forms inspired by these real life stories. Art is juried and two prizes are awarded as follows:

- Dottie Award - awarded to the artist who creates the most compelling visual story.
- People's Choice - awarded by the gala attendees from votes taken at the event

It is SMO’s hope that through sharing these powerful stories in word and art, these extraordinary women will impact and inspire others to rise above their own circumstances.

Empowering Hearts is SMO’s signature fundraising event. All proceeds from the event are used to support programs that empower single parents to effectively care for their families.

Who attends: COC Chancellor and Board of Trustees, City of Santa Clarita officials, prominent members of Santa Clarita, members of the Junior Chamber of Commerce (Jaycees), members of local women’s clubs (Soroptimist International, Zonta International) and SCV Media.

Approximate number of guests: 250

Publicity – Art – Gala Event

Publicity
Each honoree’s story will be publicized to the media and to the public at the Gala event.

Art
Honorees and artists are randomly paired. This is done through a computer- generated program.

The artist is charged with telling an honoree’s story visually and a grand prize will be awarded to the artist who tells the most compelling story visually. Work with your artist to be sure they are telling your story correctly. Empowering Hearts is about honoring you, but please allow your artist creative freedom!

The artwork will be the property of the honoree after the public art exhibit closes.

Gala Event
The Gala showcases the honorees and her artist and the artwork is shown to the public for the first time. Local dignitaries, families, friends and the greater SCV community are invited to view the art and read the stories of each of the honorees and learn the Grand Prize and People’s Choice Award winners

Parenting is too important a responsibility to bear alone, yet all too often single mothers and fathers are forced to do just that. With a mission to “empower single parents and their children by providing hope, support, and resources so that families can become self-sustaining and thrive,” Single Mothers Outreach (SMO) directly helps single parents find jobs, get educated, secure housing, stabilize their children’s emotional states, manage their finances, and help one another.
