From Backpack to Success: SMO’s Back-to-School Initiative

The Weight of Back-to-School for Single Parents

For many families, back-to-school season is filled with excitement — new teachers, fresh notebooks, and the promise of another year of learning. But for single parents, this season can also bring overwhelming financial pressure. Between rent, groceries, and daily living expenses, finding the extra funds for backpacks, pencils, calculators, and other supplies can feel impossible.

At Single Mothers Outreach (SMO), we know this reality all too well. When children walk into school without the tools they need, it impacts not just their learning but also their confidence and sense of belonging. No child should have to start the year already feeling behind.

That’s why we’re inviting our community to join us for our Back-to-School Donation Drive. Together, we can lift this burden for single moms and help their children step into the classroom with dignity, pride, and the resources to succeed.

The Challenge Single Parents Face During Back-to-School

According to the National Retail Federation, families spend an average of over $850 on back-to-school items each year. For a single-parent household, that number can feel insurmountable. Imagine choosing between paying a utility bill and buying a backpack, or deciding which child gets the new pair of shoes while another goes without.

The stress is more than financial — it’s emotional. Parents worry about how their children will be perceived without the right supplies, while kids may feel embarrassed or excluded when they show up unprepared. This stress can trickle into academics, affecting focus and participation in class.

At SMO, we believe every child deserves a strong start, no matter their family’s financial situation. The Back-to-School Donation Drive was created to bridge this gap. With the support of our donors, sponsors, and volunteers, we can make sure single-parent families don’t have to carry this weight alone.

What is the Back-to-School Donation Drive?

Our Back-to-School Donation Drive is part of SMO’s Building Blocks to Success Program, designed to give children of single mothers the resources they need to excel academically.

Through this initiative, we collect backpacks, notebooks, pens, markers, and other school supplies to distribute directly to families in our community. The goal is simple: ensure that every child starts school with confidence and the same opportunities as their peers.

This year, we’re proud to partner with Patty Norona Insurance Agency, our Champion Sponsor. Their support, along with the generosity of individual donors like you, makes it possible for us to expand the reach of this program and help more families than ever.

And because SMO is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, all donations are tax-deductible. But beyond the tax receipt, your gift represents something much bigger — hope, dignity, and a brighter future for a child who deserves every chance to succeed.

The Impact: How Donations Change Lives

What does a donation really mean? More than you might think.

  • $20 provides one backpack filled with basic school supplies.
  • $50 equips a child with everything they need to start the year strong — notebooks, binders, crayons, pencils, and more.
  • $100 supports multiple children or ensures older students have the more costly items like calculators or specialized supplies.

When you give, you’re not just handing over a backpack. You’re giving a child the ability to walk into school with their head held high. You’re reminding a single mother that she’s not alone, that her community sees her, and that together we are building a stronger future.

We’ve seen firsthand how transformative this support can be. A simple backpack can spark confidence, participation, and even joy. Children who once felt left out can now focus on learning, making friends, and embracing all that school has to offer.

Your generosity can be the difference between a child dreading the first day of school and one who can’t wait to get started.

Ways to Get Involved

There are several ways you can join us in making this year’s Back-to-School Donation Drive a success:

  • Donate Online: The quickest way to make an impact. A few clicks and your gift goes directly toward school supplies for local children.
  • Sponsor a Backpack: Choose to cover the cost for one child — or multiple children — and know your gift is changing lives.
  • Corporate & Community Partnerships: Businesses and organizations can join as sponsors, amplifying the impact and rallying employees or members around a worthy cause.
  • Spread the Word: Share this campaign with friends, family, and coworkers. Even if you can’t give financially, awareness is a powerful gift.

Every effort counts. Whether it’s $20, $200, or simply forwarding our campaign to your network, you are part of something bigger — a community standing together for single parents and their children.

SMO’s Broader Mission: Building Futures Beyond School Supplies

The Back-to-School Donation Drive is just one piece of a larger vision. At SMO, our work is guided by four pillars: Assist, Connect, Grow, and Inspire. From emergency support services to career development, from counseling to community events, we are committed to walking alongside single parents every step of the way.

When you give to this drive, you’re doing more than filling a backpack. You’re investing in the holistic well-being of families. You’re helping create an environment where children can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially — and where their parents can feel supported and empowered.

Your support doesn’t just prepare a child for the first day of school. It prepares them for life.

The first day of school should be filled with excitement — not anxiety about what’s missing. Together, we can ensure every child in our community has the tools to succeed.

Join us in making this Back-to-School season one of hope, confidence, and opportunity. Donate today, sponsor a backpack, or share this campaign with others.

Because when a child walks into school ready to learn, we all win.
