Empowering Single Mothers: Celebrating 30 Years of Single Mothers Outreach

March is Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to honoring the achievements and contributions of women throughout history. This year holds special significance for Single Mothers Outreach (SMO) as we commemorate three decades of unwavering support and empowerment for single-parent families in Santa Clarita and surrounding areas. As we reflect on our journey, we celebrate the milestones, success stories, and the resilient community that has been built over the past 30 years.

A Journey of Compassion and Commitment

Founded in 1995, SMO was established with a clear mission: to empower single parents and their children by providing hope, support, and resources, enabling families to become self-sustaining and thrive. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by single mothers—ranging from sudden housing instability and income loss to emotional trauma—SMO set out to create a supportive network that addresses these multifaceted needs.

Milestones of Empowerment

Over the past three decades, SMO has achieved significant milestones that have profoundly impacted the lives of single-parent families:

  • Serving Over 4,000 Families: Through personalized case management and a variety of programs, SMO has assisted more than 4,000 single parents and their children, guiding them toward self-sufficiency and stability.
  • Distributing Over $500,000 in Financial Aid: Understanding the financial strains that often accompany single parenthood, SMO has provided substantial financial assistance to help families stabilize their living situations and access essential resources during times of crisis.
  • Educational Programs with Tangible Outcomes: More than 80% of participants in SMO’s educational initiatives have reported significant improvements in parenting skills, financial literacy, and personal development, equipping them with the tools necessary for long-term success.

Programs Rooted in Four Pillars

SMO’s comprehensive approach to support is structured around four foundational pillars:

  1. Assist: Providing emergency stabilization and personalized case management to help single-parent families navigate immediate challenges and work toward self-sufficiency.
  2. Connect: Fostering connections among single parents through classes, group therapy, and a supportive network, ensuring no one feels alone in their journey.
  3. Grow: Offering training programs focused on financial literacy and life skills, empowering parents to halt financial decline and successfully raise their families.
  4. Inspire: Celebrating the achievements of families on their path to independence through various special events throughout the year, recognizing their resilience and progress.

Voices of Strength: Testimonials from Our Community

The true impact of SMO is best reflected in the stories of the individuals we’ve had the privilege to support:

  • “They help you a lot. I love the classes they give and the financial class on how to budget your money and all the help they provide. They are so nice and kind.” — Carmen Jeanette Mendoza Navarro
  • “I have been a member for going on two years now. And without them, I do not know if I could have done it, being a single parent. Truly blessed to be involved with them.” — Jessica R.
  • “This is an amazing organization. I highly recommend this organization to single parents and to people who are looking for a place to donate.” — Tracey H.

Celebrating Three Decades: Cheers to 30 Years

In honor of this milestone, SMO is hosting “Cheers to 30 Years,” a celebratory gala scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2025, at the Sand Canyon Country Club. This event aims to commemorate our journey, acknowledge the community’s support, and raise funds to continue our mission. The evening will feature live jazz, a champagne reception, hors d’oeuvres, desserts, dancing, tequila tasting, close-up magic, and exclusive photo opportunities. We invite you to join us in this celebration of resilience, community, and hope.

Looking Ahead: Building to Thrive

As we celebrate our past, we also look to the future with initiatives like the “Building to Thrive” capital campaign. This endeavor aims to secure a new building that will serve as a permanent home for SMO, enabling us to expand our services and continue supporting single-parent families for years to come.
